Chiclana de la Frontera is home to some of the most stunning beaches on the Costa de la Luz — and indeed, in the whole of Spain. With over 14 kilometres of Atlantic coastline, crystalline waters, natural surroundings and world-class facilities, it’s no wonder that Chiclana has become one of Andalusia’s most popular coastal destinations for both Spanish and international visitors.
The Beaches of Chiclana de la Frontera
La Barrosa Beach
La Barrosa is the most famous beach in Chiclana — and for good reason. Stretching for over 7 kilometres, this Blue Flag beach offers fine white sand, clean Atlantic water and a well-developed promenade lined with bars, restaurants and water sports facilities. The beach is backed by pine forests that provide natural shade and a beautiful coastal scent, especially on warm evenings.
La Barrosa is divided into several sections, each with its own character. The central section near the Novo Sancti Petri urbanisation has the most facilities and is ideal for families. The northern end is slightly wilder and attracts surfers and water sports enthusiasts. The entire beach is accessible by road and has ample parking.
Sancti Petri Beach
Sancti Petri beach is arguably the most spectacular and unique stretch of coastline in the area. Located at the southern end of the Chiclana coast, it faces the Sancti Petri Channel — a natural waterway that separates the mainland from the small island where the historic Sancti Petri Castle stands. The shallow, protected waters make it exceptionally safe for families, and the combination of castle views, fishing boats and natural marshlands creates a landscape unlike anywhere else in Spain.
This is the beach where guests of Novo Resort Deluxe have direct access — one of the key reasons our resort is so highly rated. Waking up and walking straight onto this beach is an experience that stays with you long after you’ve returned home.
Playa de Camposoto
Camposoto beach lies north of La Barrosa and is part of the Bahía de Cádiz Natural Park. It’s a quieter, more natural beach with fewer facilities, favoured by those who prefer a more unspoiled coastal experience. The beach is popular with dog walkers, cyclists and nature lovers, and offers excellent views towards Cádiz city across the bay.
Water Sports and Beach Activities
The Costa de la Luz around Chiclana and Sancti Petri is one of Europe’s top destinations for wind-powered water sports. The Levante wind that blows from the east across these shores — strong, reliable and consistent — has made this area a world-renowned hub for kitesurfing and windsurfing. Several international competitions are held here each year, attracting professionals and enthusiasts from around the globe.
For guests staying at Novo Resort Deluxe, a full range of water sports and beach activities can be arranged, including:
- Kitesurfing and windsurfing: lessons for all levels, from complete beginners to advanced riders.
- Kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding (SUP): explore the Sancti Petri lagoon and get close to the castle from the water.
- Surfing: the exposed Atlantic beaches offer consistent waves, particularly in autumn and winter.
- Boat trips: guided excursions by boat or catamaran, including dolphin-watching tours in the bay.
- Cycling: a network of coastal cycling paths links Sancti Petri to La Barrosa and beyond.
The Sancti Petri Castle
One of the most iconic sights on the Chiclana coastline is the Castillo de Sancti Petri — a historic fortress perched on a small island at the mouth of the Sancti Petri Channel. The site has been continuously occupied since antiquity; archaeologists believe it was the location of the famous Phoenician temple of Melkart (later known as the Heracleum or Temple of Hercules), one of the most important sanctuaries of the ancient world.
The current castle structure dates largely from the 18th century and played a strategic role during the Peninsular War. Today it is a listed monument (Bien de Interés Cultural) and can be visited by boat. Guided tours depart from the Sancti Petri jetty during spring and summer — the boat ride itself, with views of the castle, the lagoon and the natural park, is a highlight in its own right.
Natural Park and Wildlife
Much of the coastline around Chiclana falls within the Bahía de Cádiz Natural Park, a protected area of outstanding natural beauty that encompasses beaches, salt marshes, salt pans and pine forests. The park is a critical habitat for migratory and resident bird species, including greater flamingos, spoonbills, herons, egrets and numerous wader species. Birdwatchers will find the marshes around Sancti Petri and Camposoto particularly rewarding.
The salt pans (salinas) of the area have been in use since Roman times and continue to produce high-quality sea salt. Many are now managed as nature reserves, and guided birdwatching tours can be arranged through local operators.
Best Time to Visit Chiclana de la Frontera

Summer (July–September) is peak season: beaches are packed, the sea is warm (24–26°C) and the evenings are long and lively. Accommodation fills up fast — book well in advance.
